Water Safety and Drowning Prevention

Louisiana has the fourth highest drowning rate in the United States among children 0-14 years of age. Drowning is also the fourth leading cause of injury-related death for Louisiana children in this age group.1 Younger children are at particularly high risk. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4.

The Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Family Health’s Violence and Injury Prevention Program works to prevent and reduce injuries and violence, including drowning and water-related injuries. The program partners with state and local organizations to raise awareness, promote water safety, and provide drowning prevention education in communities across Louisiana

Drowning Prevention Tips

  • Supervise children: Watch children when they are in or around the water, without being distracted. Young children should always be within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure more experienced swimmers are with a partner every time they are around bodies of water.
  • Designate a “water watcher:” When there are several adults present, take turns designating an adult responsible for watching children in or near the water for a certain period of time (e.g., designated water watchers can switch out every 15 minutes).
  • Teach children to swim: Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready.  Take their age, development, and how often they are around water into consideration.
  • Have proper barriers: Ensure the fence around your pool is at least five feet tall with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Make sure doors and windows to the pool are always locked and alarmed. Have a pool alarm installed to alert you when anyone goes into the water.
  • Learn CPR: Become certified in CPR and update your skills annually. It could save the life of your child or another person.
